Simple Potato Gratin with Ham and Cheese

  • 2 large eggs
  • 200 ml kefir
  • 180 g flour
  • 7 g baking powder
  • 2 large potatoes, thinly sliced
  • 1 leek stalk, finely chopped
  • 100 g chopped ham
  • 100 g hard mozzarella cheese, grated
  • A bunch of fresh dill, chopped
  • Salt and ground black pepper, to taste

Instructions:

  1. Prepare the Batter:
    • In a large mixing bowl, whisk the eggs and kefir together. Sift in the flour and baking powder, and stir until smooth.
  2. Layer the Ingredients:
    • Grease a baking dish with a bit of butter or oil. Arrange a layer of thinly sliced potatoes at the bottom. Sprinkle some of the leek, ham, and a portion of the mozzarella cheese over the potatoes. Season with salt and pepper and a bit of chopped dill. Repeat the layers until all ingredients are used, finishing with a layer of cheese and dill on top.
  3. Pour the Batter:
    • Pour the kefir and egg mixture evenly over the layered potatoes. The liquid should come about halfway up the sides of the dish, not covering the top layer completely to allow the top to get crispy.
  4. Bake:
    • Preheat your oven to 200°C (390°F). Place the gratin in the oven and bake for about 40-45 minutes, or until the top is golden brown and the potatoes are tender.
  5. Serve:
    • Remove the gratin from the oven and let it sit for a few minutes before serving. This allows the layers to set, making it easier to serve.
