Cuisine American, Comfort Food
- 1 medium-sized cabbage diced or shredded
- 6 slices of bacon chopped
- 1 medium onion diced
- 2-3 cloves garlic minced
- Salt and pepper to taste
- 1 tablespoon apple cider vinegar optional
- 1/2 teaspoon red pepper flakes optional, for heat
Cook the bacon:
In a large skillet, cook the chopped bacon over medium heat until it becomes crispy.
Once cooked, use a slotted spoon to remove the bacon and set it aside, leaving the rendered bacon fat in the pan.
Sauté the onions and garlic:
In the same skillet with the bacon fat, add the diced onion and cook until softened, about 3-4 minutes.
Add the minced garlic and sauté for an additional minute, until fragrant.
Add the cabbage:
Add the chopped or shredded cabbage to the skillet, stirring well to combine it with the onions and garlic.
Season with salt and pepper to taste. Cook the cabbage for 8-10 minutes, stirring occasionally, until it becomes tender but still has a slight crunch.
Add optional ingredients:
If desired, stir in the apple cider vinegar for a tangy brightness and the red pepper flakes for a bit of heat.
Cook for an additional 2 to 3 minutes to let the flavors blend together beautifully.
Combine and serve:
Once the cabbage is cooked to your liking, stir the crispy bacon back into the skillet.
Mix everything together, taste, and adjust seasoning if necessary. Serve hot as a delicious side dish to accompany any meal.
