Ingredients

  • 1 medium red onion diced
  • 1 lime juiced (about 2 tablespoons)
  • 1/2 teaspoon of sea salt with extra for seasoning
  • 1 large beefsteak tomato or heirloom variety diced
  • 1 large English cucumber or two medium-sized cucumbers, diced
  • 1 serrano pepper finely diced (adjust for spice preference)
  • 1/4 cup fresh cilantro finely chopped
  • 1/4 cup of fresh mint leaves finely minced
  • 1 teaspoon ground cumin
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1/2 teaspoon chaat masala optional

Instructions

  • Prepare the vegetables: In a large bowl, combine the diced red onion, chopped tomato, and chopped cucumber. Gently combine all the ingredients in a bowl until well blended.
  • Add the herbs and spice: Stir in the finely chopped cilantro and mint leaves. For added flavor, sprinkle in the ground cumin, black pepper, and optional chaat masala.
  • Adjust the heat: Add the finely diced serrano pepper to the salad. If you prefer less spice, use half the pepper or omit it entirely.
  • Add the lime and season: Squeeze the fresh lime juice over the salad and season with salt to taste. Mix everything well, ensuring that the lime juice and spices are distributed evenly.
  • Chill and serve: Let the salad sit for about 10 minutes to allow the flavors to blend. Serve fresh as a side dish to complement your favorite Indian curries, kebabs, or rice dishes.
