Cuisine American
- 1 lb ground beef or turkey for a lighter version
- 1 small onion diced
- 3 cloves garlic minced
- 1 medium head of cabbage chopped
- 2 carrots sliced
- 3 cups beef broth
- 1 28 oz can diced tomatoes
- 1 15 oz can tomato sauce
- 1/2 cup uncooked long grain white rice
- 2 tbsp brown sugar
- 1 tbsp Worcestershire sauce
- 1 tsp paprika
- 1 tsp dried thyme
- 1 bay leaf
- Salt and pepper to taste
Brown the Meat: In a skillet over medium heat, brown the ground beef (or turkey), breaking it apart as it cooks. Once cooked through, drain any excess grease. Add the diced onions and garlic, sautéing until fragrant, about 2-3 minutes.
Assemble in Slow Cooker: In a large slow cooker, combine the browned meat mixture, chopped cabbage, carrots, beef broth, diced tomatoes, tomato sauce, and uncooked rice.
Season: Stir in the brown sugar, Worcestershire sauce, paprika, thyme, bay leaf, and salt and pepper. Mix everything well to ensure the flavors are evenly distributed.
Cook: Cover the slow cooker and cook on low for 7-8 hours or on high for 4-5 hours, until the cabbage and carrots are tender, and the rice is fully cooked.
Finish and Serve: Once cooked, remove the bay leaf and taste to adjust the seasoning if needed. Serve hot, optionally garnishing with a sprinkle of fresh parsley or a dollop of sour cream for extra richness.
