Ingredients

  • 2 1/2 cups all-purpose flour
  • 2 tablespoons granulated sugar
  • 1 tablespoon baking powder
  • 1 teaspoon salt
  • 1 1/2 cups buttermilk
  • 1/2 cup 1 stick unsalted butter, melted

Instructions

  • Preheat the oven to 450°F (230°C). Drizzle the melted butter into an 8x8-inch baking dish, making sure it covers the bottom evenly.
  • In a large mixing bowl, whisk together the flour, sugar, baking powder, and salt until well combined.
  • Add the buttermilk to the dry ingredients and gently stir until just combined. The dough will be dense and sticky—be careful not to mix it too much.
  • Transfer the dough to the prepared baking dish with the melted butter. Use a spatula to press the dough into an even layer, allowing some butter to rise over the top.
  • Score the dough into nine squares with a knife for easy cutting after baking.
  • Bake for 20-25 minutes, or until the biscuits are golden brown and the edges are crisp.
  • Cool slightly before slicing and serving warm. Enjoy plain, or with honey, jam, or butter.
