Prepare the Cake and Pudding: Bake your chocolate cake or brownie according to the recipe or package directions. Allow it to cool completely before cutting it into bite-sized cubes. Prepare the chocolate pudding according to package instructions or make a homemade version. Set aside to cool.
Make the Whipped Cream: In a large mixing bowl, beat the cold heavy cream, powdered sugar, and vanilla extract using an electric mixer until soft peaks form. Be careful not to overbeat. If using whipped topping, defrost it in the refrigerator ahead of time.
Assemble the Trifle: In a large trifle bowl or individual dessert glasses, start by layering half of the chocolate cake or brownie cubes at the bottom. Drizzle 2 ounces of kirsch, cherry brandy, or cherry juice over the cake layer to moisten it and infuse it with flavor. Spoon half of the cherry pie filling evenly over the cake layer, spreading it out. Add half of the chocolate pudding on top of the cherries, spreading it evenly. Repeat the layers with the remaining cake cubes, 2 ounces of kirsch or cherry juice, cherry pie filling, and chocolate pudding.
Top with Whipped Cream: Generously spread or pipe the whipped cream over the top layer of pudding. For an elegant look, use a piping bag with a star tip to create decorative swirls.
Garnish: Decorate the top of the trifle with fresh cherries, shaved chocolate, and chocolate sprinkles. Lightly dust with icing sugar or cocoa powder for a beautiful finish.
Chill and Serve: Refrigerate the trifle for at least 2 hours before serving to allow the flavors to meld together. Serve chilled and enjoy the rich, decadent layers of this Black Forest Trifle Delight!
