Equipment

  • Crockpot
  • Skillet
  • mixing bowl
  • Baking Sheet

Ingredients

For the Beef

  • 2 pounds beef chuck roast The heart of this dish; perfect for slow cooking to achieve juicy, tender bites.
  • 1 tablespoon olive oil Adds richness and aids in browning the meat for depth of flavor.
  • 1 teaspoon salt Essential for enhancing the natural flavors of the beef. Adjust to your taste preference.
  • 1 teaspoon black pepper Provides a lovely warmth; feel free to substitute with white pepper for a gentler touch.
  • 1 teaspoon garlic powder Adds savory depth; fresh minced garlic works well for a stronger taste.
  • 1 teaspoon onion powder Delivers sweetness and aroma; fresh sautéed onions can be a great swap.

For the Broth

  • 2 cups beef broth Moistens the beef and creates that delicious au jus; use veggie broth for a vegetarian-friendly option!
  • 1 tablespoon Worcestershire sauce Introduces umami and tang; can be reduced or omitted for gluten-free diets.
  • 1 tablespoon soy sauce Enhances umami flavor; opt for tamari if you need a gluten-free choice.

For the Sandwiches

  • 4 slices provolone cheese Creates a wonderful creamy texture when melted; Swiss or cheddar can add a unique twist.
  • 1 tablespoon fresh parsley A sprinkle of green to brighten up the dish!

Instructions

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Start by patting the beef chuck roast dry with paper towels. Rub the roast generously with olive oil, then season all sides with salt, black pepper, garlic powder, and onion powder.
  • If you choose to enhance the flavor, heat a skillet over medium-high heat. Sear the seasoned beef for about 3-4 minutes on each side, until a golden crust forms.
  • Place the beef chuck roast into the Crockpot, positioned in the center with enough space for the broth mixture.
  • In a medium bowl, combine beef broth, Worcestershire sauce, and soy sauce. Whisk until well mixed.
  • Pour the broth mixture over the beef in the Crockpot, ensuring it envelops the roast.
  • Set your Crockpot to cook on low for 8 hours.
  • After 8 hours, carefully remove the beef and let it rest for about 5 minutes. Shred the beef into bite-sized pieces.
  • Return the shredded beef to the Crockpot and mix it with the remaining juices.
  • Slice the hoagie rolls in half. If using cheese, melt it in the oven at 350°F for 1-2 minutes.
  • Fill each roll with the flavorful shredded beef and serve with a small bowl of au jus for dipping.

Notes

Searing the beef is optional but highly recommended for enhanced flavor. Store leftovers properly for best taste.
