For the Loaf

  • 16 oz French bread loaf Crispy exterior for stuffing

For the Filling

  • 8 oz thinly sliced flank steak Substitutable with ribeye or sirloin
  • 1 cup provolone cheese, shredded Mozzarella or cheddar are alternatives
  • 4 cloves fresh garlic, minced Fresh is best for flavor
  • 1 cup sliced bell peppers, mixed colors Adds color and texture
  • 1 cup sliced sweet onions Can use yellow or red onions
  • 2 tbsp olive oil For sautéing
  • salt To taste
  • pepper To taste

Step-by-Step Instructions

  • Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C). Gather all your ingredients and equipment.
  • In a skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium heat. Add sliced sweet onions and mixed bell peppers and sauté for 5-7 minutes.
  • Push the veggies to the side of the skillet. Add thinly sliced flank steak, seasoning with salt and pepper. Cook for about 3-5 minutes until browned.
  • Slice the French bread loaf lengthwise and scoop out some of the inner bread to create a hollow space.
  • Mix the cooked steak and sautéed vegetables in the skillet. Add shredded provolone cheese and stir until melted.
  • Divide the filling evenly between the two halves of the prepared bread loaf.
  • Place the stuffed loaf on a parchment-lined baking sheet and bake for 15-20 minutes until golden brown and crispy.
  • Remove from the oven and let the loaf rest for about 5 minutes. Cut into portions and serve warm.

Notes

Use fresh ingredients for best results. Customize with different cheeses or add sautéed mushrooms or jalapeños.
