Ingredients
Scale
- 2 ripe avocados (halved, pitted, and cut into wedges.)
- ½ cup apple cider vinegar
- ½ cup water
- 1 tablespoon sugar
- 1 teaspoon salt
- 1 teaspoon black peppercorns
- 1 garlic clove (sliced)
- ½ teaspoon crushed chili flakes (optional, for extra warmth.)
- Fresh cilantro or parsley (optional, for garnish)
Instructions
Prepare the Pickling Brine:
- In a small saucepan, combine the apple cider vinegar, water, sugar, salt, black peppercorns, garlic slices, and red pepper flakes (if using).
- Heat the mixture on medium, stirring frequently until the sugar and salt are fully dissolved, then allow it to simmer.
- Take it off the heat and let the brine cool down a bit.
Slice the Avocados:
- While the brine cools, peel, pit, and slice the avocados into thick, even slices. Be gentle to avoid bruising the avocado.
Pickle the Avocados:
- Place the avocado slices in a glass jar or airtight container.
- Pour the warm pickling brine over the avocados, ensuring they are fully submerged.
- Let the mixture cool to room temperature, then seal the jar and refrigerate for at least 1-2 hours before serving.
- For best results, let the avocados pickle for 24 hours to develop deeper flavor.
Garnish and Serve:
- Before serving, garnish with fresh cilantro or parsley for added color and flavor.
- These pickled avocados can be served chilled as a tangy addition to tacos, salads, toast, or any dish where you want a zesty, creamy bite.
Notes
- Choose Ripe but Firm Avocados: Overripe avocados can become mushy in the brine, so opt for ones that are just ripe.
- Use a Non-Reactive Container: Glass jars or ceramic containers are best for pickling.
- Customize the Flavor: Add herbs like dill or spices like cumin to the brine for a unique twist.
- Store Properly: Keep the pickled avocados refrigerated and consume them within 3–4 days for the best flavor and texture.
