This Fried Cabbage with Bacon, Onion, and Garlic is a rich and flavorful dish packed with crispy bacon, caramelized onions, and tender cabbage. Seasoned to perfection with garlic, paprika, and black pepper, this Southern-inspired recipe makes the perfect side dish or main course. It’s quick, easy, and bursting with smoky, savory goodness!

Ingredients

Scale
  • 6 slices bacon
  • 1 large onion, diced
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 1 large head cabbage, cored and sliced
  • 1 tablespoon salt (or to taste)
  • 1 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • ½ teaspoon onion powder
  • ½ teaspoon garlic powder
  • ⅛ teaspoon paprika
  • ½ cup shredded carrots (optional)

Instructions

  • Prepare the Ingredients
    • Chop the bacon into small pieces.
    • Dice the onion, mince the garlic, and slice the cabbage into thin strips.
  • Cook the Bacon
    • Heat a large skillet over medium heat.
    • Cook the bacon until crispy, about 5-7 minutes.
    • Remove the bacon with a slotted spoon, leaving the grease in the pan.
  • Sauté the Onions and Garlic
    • Add the onion to the bacon grease and cook until soft, about 3-5 minutes.
    • Stir in the garlic and cook for another minute until fragrant.
  • Cook the Cabbage
    • Add the cabbage to the skillet and toss to coat with the bacon grease.
    • Sprinkle with salt, pepper, onion powder, garlic powder, and paprika.
    • If using, stir in the shredded carrots for added sweetness.
  • Simmer Until Tender
    • Cook, stirring occasionally, for 10-15 minutes until the cabbage softens but still has a slight crunch.
    • If needed, add a splash of water or broth to prevent sticking.
  • Add the Bacon and Serve
    • Stir in the crispy bacon and cook for another 2 minutes to blend flavors.
    • Serve warm as a side dish or main course!

Notes

  • Make it Spicy: Add ¼ teaspoon red pepper flakes for a kick.
  • Vegan Option: Use olive oil instead of bacon grease and swap bacon for smoked tofu or mushrooms.
  • Storage & Reheating: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in a skillet over medium heat.
  • Meal Prep Friendly: Cook ahead and reheat for a quick, flavorful meal!
