Description

A perfect blend of a croissant and a muffin, cruffins are buttery, flaky, and melt-in-your-mouth delicious. These golden pastries are crisp on the outside, soft on the inside, and perfect for breakfast, brunch, or a sweet treat. Best of all, they’re easier to make than croissants and can be customized with various fillings like cinnamon sugar, Nutella, or jam!

Ingredients

Scale

For the Dough

  • 3 ½ cups (450g) all-purpose flour
  • ¼ cup (50g) granulated sugar
  • 1 ½ teaspoons salt
  • 2 ¼ teaspoons (1 packet) instant yeast
  • ¾ cup (180ml) warm milk
  • ½ cup (120ml) warm water
  • 4 tablespoons (60g) unsalted butter, softened

For the Butter Layer

  • 1 cup (225g) unsalted butter, softened

Optional Topping

  • Powdered sugar, for dusting

Instructions

1. Prepare the Dough

  1. In a large bowl, mix flour, sugar, salt, and instant yeast.
  2. Add warm milk and water, stirring until a dough forms.
  3. Knead in softened butter and continue kneading until smooth (8-10 minutes).
  4. Cover and let the dough rise for 1 hour, or until doubled in size.

2. Roll and Butter the Dough

  1. Roll the dough into a 12×18-inch rectangle.
  2. Spread softened butter evenly over the surface.

3. Shape the Cruffins

  1. Roll the dough tightly into a log.
  2. Cut the log in half lengthwise to expose the layers.
  3. Roll each strip into a spiral, keeping the layered side outward.

4. Proof and Bake

  1. Place spirals in a greased muffin tin, tucking the ends underneath.
  2. Cover and let rise for 30-45 minutes until puffy.
  3. Preheat oven to 375°F (190°C) and bake for 18-22 minutes, or until golden brown.

5. Finishing Touches

  • Let cruffins cool slightly, then dust with powdered sugar.
  • Enjoy warm or store in an airtight container for up to 3 days.

  • For Extra Flakiness: Chill the dough before rolling.
  • Flavor Variations: Fill with jam, cinnamon sugar, or Nutella before rolling.
