- 2 large green tomatoes
- 1 cup all-purpose flour, divided
- ¾ cup self-rising yellow cornmeal
- 1 teaspoon seasoned salt
- ½ teaspoon granulated garlic or garlic powder
- ½ teaspoon onion powder
- ½ teaspoon smoked paprika
- ½ teaspoon freshly ground black pepper
- 2 large eggs
- 2 tablespoons whole buttermilk
- 1 teaspoon hot sauce
- 4 tablespoons vegetable oil for frying (add more as needed)
Instructions
1. Prepare the Tomatoes
- Wash the green tomatoes and pat them dry.
- Slice them into ¼-inch thick rounds and place them on a paper towel to drain any excess moisture.
2. Set Up the Dredging Station
- In three shallow bowls, prepare the coating:
- Bowl 1: Add ½ cup of all-purpose flour.
- Bowl 2: Mix cornmeal, remaining ½ cup flour, seasoned salt, garlic powder, onion powder, smoked paprika, and black pepper.
- Bowl 3: Whisk together eggs, buttermilk, and hot sauce.
3. Coat the Tomatoes
- Dredge each tomato slice in Bowl 1 (flour), shaking off excess.
- Dip into Bowl 3 (egg mixture), making sure it’s fully coated.
- Finally, press into Bowl 2 (cornmeal mixture), covering completely.
4. Fry the Tomatoes
- Heat vegetable oil in a large skillet over medium heat.
- Once the oil is hot, fry the tomatoes in batches for 2-3 minutes per side, until golden brown and crispy.
- Transfer to a paper towel-lined plate to drain excess oil.
5. Serve & Enjoy
- Serve hot with remoulade, ranch dressing, or spicy aioli.
- Garnish with fresh herbs or extra seasoning, if desired.
