Description

This easy Tuna Melt recipe features a creamy tunasalad with Dijon mustard and pickles, layered with melted cheddar or Swisscheese and fresh tomato, all grilled to golden perfection.

Ingredients

Scale
  • 2 cans of tuna packed in water (thoroughly drained.)
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 teaspoon Dijon mustard
  • 1/2 small onion (finely chopped)
  • 1 tablespoon pickles (chopped (optional))
  • Salt and pepper (to taste)
  • 4 slices of your preferred bread (whether it be whole grain, white, or another variety.)
  • 4 slices of cheddar or Swiss cheese
  • 1 large tomato (thinly sliced)
  • Butter or margarine (for toasting the bread)

Instructions

  1. Prepare the Tuna Salad: In a medium bowl, combine the drained tuna, mayonnaise, Dijon mustard, finely chopped onion, and pickles (if using). Stir until well mixed.
  2. Assemble the Sandwiches: Lay out the slices of bread. Top each with thinly sliced tomatoes and a slice of cheddar or Swiss cheese. Place the remaining bread slices on top to form a sandwich.
  3. Butter the Bread: Lightly butter the outside of each sandwich, ensuring even coverage for crisp, golden toasting.
  4. Toast the Tuna Melts: Heat a skillet or griddle over medium heat. Place the sandwiches on the hot skillet and cook for 3-4 minutes on each side, or until the bread is golden brown and the cheese is melted. Press the sandwiches down gently with a spatula while cooking to ensure even toasting.
  5. Serve: Once both sides are toasted and the cheese has melted, remove the sandwiches from the skillet. Cut them in half and serve warm.

Notes

  • Choose Quality Tuna: Opt for tuna packed in water for a lighter texture, or use oil-packed tuna for a richer flavor.
  • Use Fresh Bread: Sourdough, whole grain, or even rye bread add texture and flavor.
  • Experiment with Cheese: While cheddar and Swiss are classics, try pepper jack for a spicy twist or mozzarella for a mild, stretchy option.
  • Don’t Overcrowd the Skillet: Toast sandwiches in batches if needed to ensure even cooking.
