Description

The Best Tuna Melt on Sourdough is the ultimate comfort food. Crispy toasted sourdough, a creamy tuna filling, gooey melted cheese, and tangy gherkins make this a sandwich to remember. Quick to prepare and endlessly satisfying, it’s perfect for lunch, dinner, or a snack.

Ingredients

Scale

For the Tuna Melt:

  • 4 slices sourdough (toasted (35-40g / 2 oz. each))
  • 180 g canned tuna in brine (6 oz., drained weight)
  • 1/4 small white or red onion (finely diced)
  • 1 heaped teaspoon wholegrain mustard
  • 2.5 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 1 cup grated cheese (e.g., Cheddar, Tasty, or other preferred cheese)
  • Sea salt and freshly ground black pepper (added according to your taste.)

To Serve:

  • Gherkins (pickles)
  • Sliced cucumber

Instructions

Prepare the Tuna Mixture:

  1. Remove the canned tuna from its liquid and transfer it to a mixing bowl.
  2. Add the finely diced onion, wholegrain mustard, and mayonnaise to the tuna.
  3. Mix until well combined.
  4. Season with sea salt and ground black pepper to taste.

Toast the Sourdough:

  1. Lightly toast the slices of sourdough until golden and crispy.

Assemble the Tuna Melt:

  1. Spread the tuna mixture evenly on two slices of toasted sourdough.
  2. Sprinkle the grated cheese generously on top of the tuna mixture.

Melt the Cheese:

  1. Place the assembled sandwiches under a broiler or in an oven preheated to 400°F (200°C) until the cheese is fully melted and bubbly, about 3-5 minutes.

Serve:

  1. Top with the remaining slices of toasted sourdough, or serve open-faced if preferred.
  2. Serve the tuna melts with gherkins and sliced cucumber on the side for a fresh, tangy bite.

Notes

  • Cheese Options: Feel free to substitute Cheddar with Gouda, Havarti, or Swiss for a unique flavor twist.
  • Make it Spicy: Add a pinch of cayenne pepper or diced jalapeños to the tuna mixture for a kick.
  • Storage Tips: Leftovers can be stored in an airtight container in the refrigerator for up to 2 days. Reheat in the oven for the best texture.
