Ingredients
Scale
- Cooking spray or parchment paper
- 1 pound 450g asparagus (about 20 spears, medium thickness)
- 2 tablespoons olive oil
- 1 teaspoon garlic powder
- 1 teaspoon smoked paprika (optional, for extra flavor)
- 1/2 teaspoon black pepper
- 1 tablespoon of brown sugar (optional, to add a hint of caramelization.)
- 10 slices bacon (regular, not thick-cut)
Instructions
- Prepare the Asparagus: Preheat your oven to 400°F (200°C) and line a baking sheet with parchment paper or lightly coat it with cooking spray. Rinse the asparagus and trim the woody ends, leaving about 4–5 inches of the tender stalks.
- Season the Asparagus: In a large bowl, toss the asparagus spears with olive oil, garlic powder, smoked paprika (if using), and black pepper. Sprinkle with brown sugar if you prefer a caramelized flavor.
- Wrap the Asparagus: Divide the asparagus into 10 bundles (2 spears per bundle). Wrap a slice of bacon tightly around each bundle, starting at one end and spiraling to the other. Secure with a toothpick if needed.
- Bake the Bundles: Place the bacon-wrapped asparagus bundles on the prepared baking sheet with the seam side of the bacon facing down. Roast for 20–25 minutes, or until the bacon becomes crispy and the asparagus is perfectly tender.
- Serve: Take out the toothpicks (if you used them) and arrange the bundles on a serving platter. Serve them warm as a delicious side dish or appetizer.
Notes
- Bacon Selection: Use regular cut bacon for optimal crispiness. Thick-cut bacon may not crisp as well unless pre-cooked slightly.
- Make-Ahead Option: Assemble bundles and refrigerate up to 24 hours before baking.
- Variations:
- Spicy: Add a pinch of red pepper flakes.
- Sweet & Savory: Use the brown sugar option for a caramelized effect.
- Herby: Sprinkle with fresh rosemary or thyme before baking.
- Leftovers: Store in an airtight container in the fridge for up to 3 days. Reheat in the oven to retain crispiness.
- Gluten-Free: Naturally gluten-free with no modifications needed.
